I have actually developed a set of cornhole boards, plywood tops, which I have actually painted via a Sherwin Williams latex paint. I’m putting a large vinyl decal, 12” diameter, on the boards…and also I’m involved that in time the cornhole bags continuously landing on or near the decal will certainly ultimately loosen the adhesives.

You watching: Lacquer over latex paint

I haven’t used lacquer enough to have actually any comfort with it. But when I have supplied it, small tasks, I appreciate the quick drying time and not having actually to sand also a lot. Yes it stinks. I have an unopened deserve to of brushing lacquer that I am tempted to use…unless it is recommfinished that I don’t use it. I execute have actually an HVLP sprayer so I can spray the lacquer if desired. I have actually check out differing opinions around the wisdom of spraying brushing lacquer.

My hunch is the solvents in the lacquer will most likely have a poor influence on the latex paint…making poly the winner by default. But hoping to hear some wisdom and experiences from you folks.

Thanks!!!!Bryan

I would certainly be willing to bet the lacquer will certainly not just curl the decal, yet likewise the latex. I would certainly never call anything polyurethane a “winner” but in this instance it will probably hold up better than some options. The amber coloring might be distasteful though. Consider using a waterborne, even an exterior paint base (SW A100 produced deep colors) that isn’t tinted. Right out of the can it will dry clear and also be almost as durable as an oil based finish…it will certainly be crystal clear.

Bryan, can’t stop to the lacquer question, yet have done multiple painted pieces for usage in our church and also my wife’s elementary college. Both locations put excessive wear on the finishes, an additional LJ recommended a WB poly over the latex paint and that it holds up very well. These tasks are normally “re-do’s” our on the cheap so I’ve just supplied Minwax Poly-crylic, it shoots well from my $20 HF HVLP gun. The church project I shot it over white latex and there was no yellowing of the color.

Excellent Fred!!!

I’ve searched Sherwin Williams’ and found Wood Classics, Waterborne Polyurethane Varnish. Is that the product?

I’ve used spar urethane for years on cornhole boards I’ve made from cherry, curly maple, walnut…even a few exotics, padauk, lacelumber zebrawood. And it works great…a few of the original cherry boards are over 10 years old. No degradation at all in the end up. (Oh…I waxed the boards as well.) But the spar was used over oil, mostly. My paint suffer is restricted. In this circumstances I really don’t want any tinting at all from the topcoat. The paint matches the decal.

I have a few days to decide while the paint dries fully. Well, probably a day. Ha.

Bryan, I have actually made a couple of sets of cornhole boards and also used latex paint and decals, also. The initially collection I made I provided oil based poly and did not know that the sunlight will cause the poly to yellow. My beautiful boards aren’t so beautiful anyeven more. The other sets I’ve made I provided water based poly and they’ve hosted up incredibly well and also still look great.

ChefHDAN and SpartyOn…say thanks to you men as well!!!!

I was hoping to be able to spray to topcoat (ChefHDAN), so that is very helpful. Likewise SpartyOn, I was considering an oil based poly yet didn’t realize it also would certainly ultimately yellow. Also great intel on the oil- and water-based poly.

Thanks a ton!!!!!

an off topic question for ya,fred, as i have a task comin up via vinyl decals:does the SW and also vinyl occupational out good? as in, is the adhesion good?

bryan, i think fred is referring to this:https://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/products/a100-exterior-acrylic-latex

one thing through waterbased/bourne clear topcoats is that they generally dont change the shade/shade or darken the paint they are extending. as in they dont darken them- at leastern not also a lot. initially time i offered the A100 was on a project made from a walnut slab and didnt want to hardwood to get darkened and also was suggested using the A100. the walnut barely darkened.ive been making use of the A100 on exterior tasks given that. some painted and it doesnt darken the paint its spanning.and it holds up better than any various other finish ive offered in the past. one of the jobs is a childrens table and also chair collection i put a few coats of A100 on 4 year back. they sit external all summer and also the end up is still holding up great.

Sorry, no initially hand experience. I would certainly be suspect of the adhesion over a vinyl decal.Excellent Fred!!!

- BryanFazBryan, that’s not what i referred (AW100 is simply a paint they carry), yet that stuff have to work. The just point is that you would certainly desire to examine the label to view if it’s tinted…some waterborne finishes are, some aren’t, to mimic an oil base complete. They won’t change over time (gain darker) favor an oil base, yet still might not be appealing on your boards.
